Udupi: The Catholic Diocese of Udupi came alive with an extraordinary expression of faith and devotion as thousands of Catholics from 51 parishes gathered for a solemn Eucharistic procession on Sunday. Beginning at Milagres Cathedral, Kallianpur, and culminating at Mount Rosary Church, Santhekatte, the event was a profound spiritual experience that united participants in their shared beliefs.
The day’s proceedings commenced with a sacred Mass celebrating the Feast of Christ the King, presided over by the Most Rev. Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, Bishop of Udupi. Delivering an inspiring homily, Bishop Lobo urged the faithful to embody the Christian values of love, forgiveness, and service. “Our love should not be confined to words but expressed through actions,” he said, emphasizing the call to actively build God’s Kingdom by fostering unity and compassion within communities.
Following the Mass, the Eucharistic procession moved through key landmarks, including Ozanam House and Goretti Hospital, before reaching the Mount Rosary Church grounds. A brass band led the way, followed by cross-bearers and candle bearers. The Bishop carried the Blessed Sacrament, enthroned on a beautifully decorated vehicle, as participants, holding candles and singing hymns of praise, filled the streets with an atmosphere of reverence and devotion. The organizers ensured the event was conducted smoothly, with minimal disruption to the local community.
At Mount Rosary Church, Rev. Dr Jencil Alva of Milagres Cathedral delivered a stirring homily. He highlighted the Eucharist's pivotal role in strengthening the bond between the faithful and Christ. Drawing on Scripture, he emphasized the Eucharist as a source of spiritual sustenance and hope, particularly significant as the Church prepares for the Jubilee Year in 2025. “This Jubilee Year is an opportunity to rekindle the flame of faith and strengthen our collective resolve,” he remarked.
The event witnessed the participation of over 50 priests, over 100 religious sisters, and a vast number of lay faithful. Key diocesan leaders, including Vicar General Msgr. Ferdinand Gonsalves, Chancellor V. Rev. Dr Roshan D’Souza, and the Deans of various deaneries, V. Rev. Fr Alban D’Souza Dean of Karkala deanery, V. Rev. Fr Charles Menezes, Dean of Udupi Denery; V. Rev. Dr Leslie D’Souza Dean of Shirva Deanery and V. Rev. Fr Paul Rego, Dean of Kundapur Deanery graced the occasion. Parish priests Rev. Dr Roque D’Souza, Parish Priest of Mount Rosary Church, Santhekatte; Rev. Fr Oliver Nazareth, and Rev. Fr Pradeep Cardoza, along with Udupi Diocese PRO Fr. Denis D’Sa and other priests, played integral roles in organizing the event.
This grand turnout underscored the deep-rooted faith and commitment of the Udupi Diocese community. It reflected the enduring significance of such traditions in fostering spiritual growth, unity, and a collective journey of faith among believers.
The procession’s success is a testament to the strength of the Udupi Diocese in nurturing a vibrant, faith-filled community ready to carry forward the mission of Christ.
