Udupi: A historic and joyous celebration unfolded at the open grounds of Milagres Cathedral, Kallianpur, on Sunday, as the Diocese of Udupi marked the 75th birthday of Most Rev. Gerald Isaac Lobo, Bishop of Udupi, alongside the Silver Jubilee of his 25 years of Episcopal ordination. This momentous occasion was a tribute to Bishop Lobo’s unwavering commitment to the spiritual and social welfare of the community.

The event was graced by the esteemed presence of the Apostolic Nuncio to India and Nepal, Most Rev. Leopoldo Girelli, who was warmly welcomed by Bishop Lobo, Msgr. Ferdinand Gonsalves (Vicar General of the Diocese of Udupi), V. Rev. Dr. Roshan D’Souza (Chancellor of the Diocese), and several lay leaders. Notably, this was the Apostolic Nuncio’s first official engagement with the Diocese of Udupi, adding further significance to the celebration.

The festivities commenced with a solemn Thanksgiving Mass presided over by Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo. The congregation, comprising bishops, clergy, and devoted parishioners, gathered in an atmosphere of reverence and gratitude, celebrating the remarkable journey of their beloved shepherd.

Delivering the homily, Most Rev. Francis Serrao, Bishop of Shimoga, lauded Bishop Lobo’s Christ-like leadership and dedication. “This is not merely a celebration of two milestones; it is a testament to 75 years of faith and 25 years of tireless service to the flock,” he remarked. Bishop Serrao highlighted Bishop Lobo’s role as a compassionate leader and administrator, embodying the qualities of the Good Shepherd.

Following the Eucharistic celebration, a grand felicitation ceremony was held. Apostolic Nuncio Girelli, in his address, praised Bishop Lobo’s exemplary service, describing him as a beacon of faith and humanitarian values. He emphasized that the bishop’s leadership has not only strengthened the Diocese of Udupi but has also set a commendable standard for diocesan governance nationwide.

Girelli’s speech, which began with a warm “Namaste” in Kannada, reflected his deep appreciation for Udupi’s rich cultural heritage. He commended the diocese’s social outreach initiatives that have positively impacted people from diverse backgrounds. Concluding his remarks in Konkani with a heartfelt “Dev Borem Karu” (May God bless you), he resonated deeply with the local community.

Adding to the honor, Archbishop Peter Machado of Bangalore praised Bishop Lobo for his ability to connect with people and address their needs with remarkable organizational skills and discipline. His words echoed the sentiments of many present, recognizing Bishop Lobo as a friend of the people and a guiding force for the diocese.

The program also featured a special tribute to the Apostolic Nuncio, with Bishop Lobo presenting him with a token of appreciation on behalf of the diocese. Various diocesan commissions took the opportunity to honor their bishop, reflecting the profound respect and admiration he commands within the community.

In his heartfelt acceptance speech, Bishop Lobo expressed profound gratitude to all who have supported him in his journey of faith and ministry. He acknowledged God’s blessings in his life, reaffirming his commitment to serving the diocese with dedication and humility.

The celebration witnessed the presence of several dignitaries, including Archbishop Emeritus of Bangalore and Administrator of Mysore Diocese, Most Rev. Bernard Moras; Bishop Emeritus of Agra, Most Rev. Albert D’Souza; and numerous other bishops from across India, who enriched the occasion with their presence and blessings.

Msgr. Ferdinand Gonsalves conducted the event with warmth and grace, ensuring a seamless flow of the program. He also welcomed the gathering, while Mr. Leslie Arouza, Secretary of the Diocesan Pastoral Council, proposed the vote of thanks. The Diocesan Financial Committee members, Mr. Pritesh D’Sa and Ms. Jenisha Kemmannu, played a pivotal role in hosting the event successfully.

As the celebration concluded, a deep sense of unity, faith, and gratitude filled the air.
