On August 14, 2024, a pivotal study session on the Second Vatican Council Constitution on Sacred Liturgy, “Sacrosanctum Concilium,” took place at Anugraha Pastoral Centre, Udupi. The event, attended by approximately 60 priests from both diocesan and religious backgrounds, featured Rev. Dr Ronald Serrao, Rector and Professor of Sacred Liturgy at St. Joseph Seminary, Mangalore, as the resource person.
Rev. Dr Serrao opened the session by providing a comprehensive overview of the historical context of the Constitution, addressing its purpose, origin, and significance. He emphasized that as the 61st anniversary of the Constitution approaches and the Jubilee 2025 nears, it is an opportune moment to revisit and revise the document to address contemporary needs.
Dr Serrao summarized the seven chapters of “Sacrosanctum Concilium” and urged the attending priests to deepen their understanding of the Constitution to enhance the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy. He warned against casual or complacent approaches and stressed the importance of adhering to the liturgical texts as prescribed by competent authorities. The seven chapters include: General Principles for the Restoration and Promotion of the Sacred Liturgy, The Most Sacred Mystery of the Eucharist, The Other Sacraments and the Sacramentals, The Divine Office, The Liturgical Year, Sacred Music, and Sacred Art and Sacred Furnishings.
The session concluded with a Q&A, where Dr. Serrao addressed various concerns raised by participants. Bishop of Udupi Diocese, in his closing remarks, encouraged priests to celebrate the Sacred Liturgy with renewed devotion to inspire greater participation among the faithful. He extended his wishes for a fruitful year of prayer and learning.
In line with the Year of Prayer and Learning, similar review sessions on other Vatican II documents, including “Gaudium et Spes” and “Dei Verbum,” were conducted earlier this year. These initiatives have significantly contributed to the ongoing enlightenment and empowerment of clergy and lay leaders in understanding the Vatican II Constitutions.
