In a moving celebration steeped in tradition, Most Rev. Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, Bishop of Udupi, presided over the Chrism Mass at the historic Milagres Cathedral, Kallianpur, on April 10, 2025. This annual liturgy, a spiritual high point of Holy Week, brought together the presbyterate of the diocese and a multitude of faithful to witness one of the most significant moments in the Church’s liturgical calendar.

Concelebrating with the Bishop were Msgr. Ferdinand Gonsalves, Vicar General and Cathedral Rector; V. Rev. Fr Stephen D’Souza, Chancellor; V. Rev. Fr (Dr) Roshan D’Souza, Judicial Vicar; and the Deans of all four deaneries: V. Rev. Fr Paul Rego, Dean of Kundapur Deanery; V. Rev. Fr Alban D’Souza, Dean of Karkal Deanery; V. Rev. Fr (Dr) Leslie D’Souza, Dean of Shirva Deanery, and V. Rev. Fr Charles Menezes, Dean of Udupi Deanery. Dozens of diocesan and religious priests from across the Diocese of Udupi participated in the solemn liturgy, along with a large and devout congregation.

The Chrism Mass, a profound expression of ecclesial unity, featured the blessing of the holy oils—the Oil of Catechumens, the Oil of the Sick, and the Sacred Chrism—which will be used throughout the year in the administration of the sacraments in every parish across the diocese. This sacred rite, rich in symbolism, reminds the faithful of the anointing they have received and the mission they are called to fulfill.

In his homily, Bishop Gerald Lobo delivered a stirring reflection on the dignity, responsibility, and divine beauty of the priestly vocation. "A priest is not simply a minister of the altar," he said, "but a living bridge between God and His people—a shepherd who walks ahead, with, and behind the flock." His words resonated deeply with both clergy and laity, rekindling a sense of gratitude for the gift of ordained ministry.

As the choir’s harmonious chants filled the sacred space and the incense rose like prayer, the Chrism Mass stood as a radiant testimony to the unity of the Church in Udupi—a moment where tradition and mission, consecration and service, all came together under one sacred roof.

The celebration concluded with a heartfelt renewal of priestly promises by the clergy, as the Bishop called upon all present to continue supporting their priests through prayer and collaboration in the mission of the Church.
