The month of October in the Church calendar has two very significant dates: 07th as Feast of our Lady of Rosary and 17th as Mission Sunday. These are important celebrations for us as Christians because the Rosary is a very powerful weapon of prayer given to us by the Mother of God and Christians all over the world are the fruits of the mission activity of the Church.
The prayer of the rosary is as a prayer of the Family because our Catholic families come together before they partake in the night meal to recite it with devotion. Hence, while it is a prayer that unites members of families, it makes it possible for us to contemplate on the mysteries of annunciation, suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and meditate on these Gospel events. The ‘Our Father’ we recite at the beginning of every decade is a prayer taught by Christ to his disciples; the ‘Hail Mary’ is the salutation pronounced by the Angel while bringing the ‘Good news’ of annunciation to Mother Mary and ‘The Glory be’ is adoration of the Holy Trinity, i.e. God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. The recitation of the holy Rosary while invites us to honor our heavenly Mother, it also is a means to proclaim our faith in Jesus Christ as the Saviour of the world.
Mission Sunday is an annual event in the life of the Church but the mission activity is a call given by Christ Himself to proclaim Him which is perennial: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”(Mt 28: 19-20; Mk 16:15-16). The Holy Mother the Church has no other choice but to work hard towards proclamation and evangelization which is the mission of every Christian and we can fulfill this mission in three ways: by praying for the missionaries all over the world; by proclaiming Christ through word and deed and, by contributing our mite / financial assistance promoting activity of the Church.
May our heavenly Mother who is also the Mother of the Church Bless us to be effective missionaries of proclamation and evangelization.
